hagel's nod for defense with the full vote expected today. wait, there's more. also happening today, 75 prominent republicans sign a legal brief coming out in support of marriage equality. this is landmark development and a sign of continuing conflict in the gop. we have a lot of ground to cover. we begin with the showdown over the sequester. across the board automatic cuts will kick in. joining me now is ray mavis, secretary of the navy in new york news. mr. secretary, it's great to have you with me. let's start off, first off, by explaining there's been criticism by the right about the president's pr campaign to go around and talk about what these cuts really mean, the demonstration of it all. and listen to how john boehner has listened to the president on the road. >> the president has been traveling all over the country and today, going down to newport news in order to use our military men and women as a problem in yet another campaign rally to support his tax hikes. >> mr. secretary, how do you respond to that? do you think the president is using our nation's military as a prop? >>
during the hearings of hillary clinton and even chuck hagel. >> heather: so not iminformed responses. i'll toss this question to you. they did indict the department of state, this is a quote, with shocking irresponsibility to protect american personnel at benghazi. the fact is the intelligence community and the department of state, they were sharing reports mostly provided by the c.i.a. for months that were outlining the growing threat in benghazi and, indeed, it was focused on western influence particularly the u.s. those requests early on for additional security prior to the attack went unanswered. you are satisfied with that response from panetta? >> yeah, i think what is being lost is the fact there has been an accountability review of all of this. they have laid out a number of recommendations. thef been agreed to by hillary clinton, by the president, by a number of people. we're not really at this point getting a lot new information. what is being lost in the context lindsay graham's request to have another hearing with will have papa. it's supposed -- leon panetta. there is a lot

. on their face i don't expect the senate to reject mr. brennan for cia chief, and despite mr. hagel's troubles in the confirmation hearing, i don't expect he will be blocked as a matter of substance or his performance in the hearings. but it is true that if a couple of senators decide to hold things up because they want more answers, it gives the administration a choice. it can either go to bat against the republicans and say they're being unreasonable, they're being political, they need to back down, or they could make a decision we just want to get this thing through, let's try to give them enough information to satisfy them and get it over with. jon: a mouthpiece for the administration in this situation said these are critical national security positions, and individual members -- meaning senators -- shouldn't play politics with their nominations. but isn't that what happens at every nomination, the senators trot out their list of wants, you know, information wise from the administration and use some leverage? >> yes, i mean -- well, jon, that's what advise and consent ultimately means. it
